Gabby Tabby here, and let me tell you – the barn is looking EXTRA festive this year! Someone hung twinkle lights in the tack room, there's a wreath on every stall door, and I'm pretty sure I spotted jingle bells on Thunder's halter yesterday. (He was NOT impressed, by the way. But he looked adorable!)
You know what makes December even MORE magical? Counting down the days until the holidays with your horse! That's why I created something super special for you this year: The 12 Days of Barn Rats Advent Calendar – packed with activities, challenges, and fun that'll make every trip to the barn feel like unwrapping a present!

🎁 What IS The 12 Days of Barn Rats?
Think of it like an advent calendar, but instead of chocolate (though chocolate is great!), you get 12 AWESOME barn activities to do with your horse, your barn friends, or even just by yourself if you're horse-crazy and horse-less like some of my favorite readers!
Each "day" has:
✨ A fun activity or challenge
🎨 A creative project
💪 A skill-building exercise
🎄 Holiday cheer sprinkled all over it!
You can do one activity per day for 12 days or spread them out over the whole month – whatever works for YOUR schedule!
🐴 Day 1: Deck the Stalls! 🎀
Challenge: Make your horse's stall the most festive one in the barn!
What You'll Need:
Ribbon (horse-safe colors!)
Construction paper
Markers
Tape
Whatever other Christmas decorations you want to add
How to Do It: Decorate your horse's stall with paper snowflakes, holiday signs, or a "Dear Santa" list FROM your horse! (What would YOUR horse ask Santa for? Extra carrots? A new blanket? Fewer baths? 😂)
Gabby's Tip: Hang decorations HIGH where horses can't reach them and eat them. Trust me, glitter paper does NOT make good horse snacks!
Snap & Share: Take a photo of your festive stall and share it with your barn friends!
🧘 Day 2: Gratitude Stretch ⭐
Challenge: Practice thankfulness AND flexibility!
What You'll Do: While you're stretching (before or after riding), name one thing you're grateful for with each stretch.
Try These:
Toe Touch – "I'm grateful for my horse's soft nose"
Side Stretch – "I'm grateful for my barn friends"
Butterfly Stretch – "I'm grateful I get to ride"
Shoulder Rolls – "I'm grateful for my trainer"
Neck Rolls – "I'm grateful for warm horse hugs"
Gabby's Tip: Do this with your barn buddies and share what you're grateful for! Bonus: You'll be nice and limber for riding AND you'll feel happier!
Why This Rocks: Gratitude + stretching = the PERFECT combo for young riders! Plus, being flexible helps you in the saddle!
🎨 Day 3: DIY Horse Ornament Craft 🎄
Challenge: Create a horse ornament to hang on YOUR tree at home!
What You'll Need:
Clear plastic ornament ball (from craft store)
Shredded paper or hay (clean!)
Small toy horse OR horse photo
Ribbon
Glitter (optional but AWESOME)
How to Make It:
Open the ornament ball
Put a little hay or shredded paper inside
Add your mini horse or roll up a horse photo
Add glitter if you want sparkle!
Close it up and add a ribbon hanger
Write the year on the outside!
Gabby's Favorite Part: 20 years from now, you'll pull this out and remember THIS holiday season at the barn!
Bonus Idea: Make one for your trainer as a thank-you gift!
📸 Day 4: Holiday Photo Shoot 🎅
Challenge: Get the BEST holiday photo with your horse!
Photo Ideas:
You and your horse wearing matching Santa hats
Your horse "kissing" you under mistletoe
A holiday riding outfit (wear a Santa hat while riding!)
Your horse with a big red bow
You reading "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" to your horse
Gabby's Camera Tricks:
Have someone ELSE take the photo (hard to hold a horse and a camera!)
Use treats to get your horse's ears forward
Take 100 photos and pick the best one – that's what professionals do!
Natural light is your friend (go outside if possible!)
Share It: This is your holiday card photo! Post it, print it, frame it!
🍪 Day 5: Bake Horse Treats! 🥕
Challenge: Make homemade holiday treats your horse will LOVE!
Super Simple Recipe:
Peppermint Pony Cookies
Ingredients:
2 cups oats
1 cup flour
1 mashed banana
2 carrots (shredded)
¼ cup molasses
¼ cup water
3 crushed peppermint candies (optional!)
Directions:
Mix everything in a big bowl
Roll into balls, flatten into cookies
Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes
Let cool completely!
Give ONE to your horse (save the rest for later!)
Gabby's Safety Note: Always ask your barn manager before giving treats! Some horses have dietary restrictions, and that's important to respect.
Bonus: Wrap extras in cellophane with ribbon and give to barn friends' horses!
⛄ Day 6: Winter Horse Facts Scavenger Hunt! 📚
Challenge: Become a winter horse expert!
Your Mission: Find the answers to these questions by researching online, asking your trainer, or reading horse books!
Do horses get cold in winter? (The answer might surprise you!)
Why do horses grow fuzzy winter coats?
How much water does a horse drink in winter? (Hint: MORE than you think!)
Can horses see better in winter? (There's a cool reason!)
What's the best way to keep a horse warm in winter?
Gabby's Challenge: Write down your answers and share ONE cool fact with someone at the barn who might not know it!
Why This Matters: Understanding how horses handle winter makes you a BETTER horse person! Plus, you'll sound super smart! 🤓
🎵 Day 7: Holiday Barn Caroling! 🎶
Challenge: Bring music to the barn!
How It Works: Sing holiday songs TO your horse while grooming or just hanging out!
Top Horse-Approved Songs:
"Jingle Bells" (but change it to "Jingle HOOVES!")
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (horses have better noses anyway!)
"Winter Wonderland"
"Let It Snow" (while brushing!)

🏆 Day 8: Set a Holiday Challenge! 💪
Challenge: Pick ONE riding or horse skill to master by New Year's!
Ideas for Your Challenge:
Master posting trot without bouncing
Canter on BOTH leads smoothly
Learn to braid your horse's mane
Jump a crossrail (if you're learning jumping!)
Groom your horse in under 20 minutes
Mount from the right side (way harder than it sounds!)
Do 5 yoga poses without wobbling
How to Do It:
Pick your challenge
Tell your trainer or a barn friend (accountability!)
Practice 3x per week
Track your progress
Celebrate when you nail it! 🎉
Gabby's Real Talk: You might not TOTALLY master it by New Year's, and that's okay! The point is to TRY and improve. That's what being a Barn Rat is all about!
📝 Day 9: Write a Letter to Your Horse 💌
Challenge: Tell your horse everything they mean to you!
What to Include:
Your favorite memory together
What you love most about them
What you're thankful for
Your goals for next year
Why they're special
Gabby's Prompt Ideas:
"Dear [Horse Name], my favorite thing about you is..."
"I'll never forget the time we..."
"You make me feel..."
"Next year, I hope we can..."
Do This: Read it out loud to your horse! Yes, they won't understand the words, but they'll LOVE hearing your voice. Plus, you might cry (I definitely would! 😭).
Keep It: Put this letter in a special place. Read it again next December and see how much you've both grown!
🌟 Day 10: Acts of Barn Kindness 💝
Challenge: Spread holiday cheer at the barn!
10 Acts of Barn Kindness:
Fill water buckets for other horses
Sweep the aisle without being asked
Compliment another rider
Help a younger rider groom their pony
Thank your trainer with a card
Organize the grooming box
Give treats to horses you don't normally ride
Help stack hay
Pick someone else's hooves (with permission!)
Just smile and be friendly to everyone!

Magazines (horse magazines are perfect!)

Your riding goals
Dream horse shows or events

Invite: Your barn friends, riding buddies, anyone who's been part of your horse journey this year!

Show off your vision boards
Sing "Jingle Hooves" together
Give out silly awards ("Best Mane," "Silliest Whinny," "Most Likely to Steal Your Lunch")
Take a group photo
Exchange horse-themed holiday cards

💭 From My Tiny Rat Heart to Yours...
The barn is my favorite place during the holidays. Sure, it's cold. Sure, my little rat paws get chilly. Sure, sometimes hay gets stuck to my whiskers in a really embarrassing way.
But there's something about the barn in December that just feels... magical.
Maybe it's the way the horses' breath makes little clouds in the cold air. Maybe it's how cozy the barn feels when it's snowing outside. Maybe it's the way everyone seems a little kinder, a little more patient, a little more grateful.
