Get to Know Aunt Maxine (Max)

The legendary barn rat who found this place. The adventurer with a story for everything. The wisest, funniest, most patient teacher I've ever known.

My Great Aunt Maxine (I just call her Aunt Maxine, her friends call her Max) is 93 years old and cooler than anyone you'll ever meet. She's traveled the world working in horse barns, collected more stories than I can count, and somehow ended up right here—teaching me everything she knows.

She's wise but never preachy. Funny but never mean. Patient but never a pushover. She expects me to pay attention, work hard, and think for myself. And honestly? That's what I love most about her.

Every conversation with Aunt Maxine feels like an adventure. She'll teach me how to wrap a horse's leg, then suddenly we're talking about ancient Greek mythology. She'll tell me to breathe deeper during yoga, then share a story about surviving a thunderstorm in the middle of nowhere. 🌧️

She's my hero. My teacher. My inspiration. The reason I know what it means to be brave, curious, and barn-smart.

And this barn we love so much? She's the one who found it.

HOW MAXINE FOUND THE BARN

The Night That Changed Everything

As told by Gabby

This is THE story. The one Aunt Maxine tells whenever I try to skip morning chores. The one my mom brings up at least once a week: "Tabatha! Aunt Max didn't brave wild storms and magical mayhem for you to be lazy!"

Cue my dramatic eyeroll. 🙄

But I've heard it a hundred times, and it never gets old.

It was a dark, cold, rainy night.

Aunt Max was halfway through a long journey to visit an old friend when the skies exploded with thunder and sheets of rain. Wind howled. Trees bent. The world turned into a blur of mud and mist.

Drenched and exhausted, she stumbled into the edge of a massive hay field when something caught her eye—a tiny light, flickering between the raindrops like a firefly. 💡

Curious and hopeful, Max trudged forward. The wind whipped her cloak, the rain pelted her whiskers, but she never took her eyes off that mysterious warm glow.

Focused on the light and blinded by the storm, she didn't even see the building until—WHAM!—she smacked right into it.

She rubbed her head and felt around in the dark until her paws found a slim crack between two wooden boards. Fun fact: rats can fit through very small spaces, and Aunt Maxine was a pro. She slipped inside.

Instant relief. No rain. No wind. Just quiet.

Cold and tired, she tiptoed deeper inside. It was too dark to see, so she stood perfectly still, listening for anything that might give her a clue.

Nothing. Just the storm hammering the roof.

Then—thump! She tripped over a pile of something dry and crunchy. Hay. That sweet, grassy smell was like a lullaby. Max had worked in barns her whole life. She recognized that smell and knew she'd found shelter. 🌾

She pulled a chunk of cheese from her jacket pocket 🧀 (road snacks equal survival essentials), nibbled it down, and made herself a fluffy little nest out of the hay. Within moments, she was fast asleep.

By morning, the storm had passed and golden sunlight spilled through the cracks in the barn walls. A rooster crowed. Max rolled over, pulled her hat over her eyes, and sighed.

For a moment, she forgot she wasn't in her own cozy bed. Her bones ached a bit—she wasn't exactly a young rat anymore—but she still had plenty of adventure left in her.

She sat up, dusted off the hay, straightened her cloak, and stretched. That's when she heard it: voices. Hoofbeats. Laughter.

Max tiptoed to the edge of the loft she'd been sleeping in and peeked over.

Her heart leapt. 💕

Below her, the barn was ALIVE—filled with beautiful, strong horses. 🐴 Humans bustled about, mucking stalls and brushing coats. It wasn't just a building. It was a barn. A real, working horse barn. And it was glorious.

Max's eyes sparkled. She hadn't meant to find this place. But somehow, it felt like it had been waiting for her all along.

The space was perfect. Cozy. Safe. Full of horses and hay and hardworking hearts. She could feel it in her tail—this place was special.

So, she stayed. 🏠

Years passed. Aunt Max went on plenty more adventures, of course (remind me to tell you about the time she outwitted a shape-shifting fox on the edge of Fogroot Marsh 🦊). But no matter where she wandered, this barn was always home.

And now, generations later, it's ours.

I want to be just like her one day: brave, smart, curious, and hoof-smart. I want to care for horses, explore new places, and always follow the flicker of magic when it calls.

But first, I've got chores to do.

Wisdom from Maxine

Max's Philosophy on Life, Yoga, and Barn Work

Pack cheese for the road.

Always be prepared. You never know when you'll need energy, comfort, or a good snack.

Breathe before you react.

Whether you're approaching a nervous horse or facing a difficult situation, take three deep breaths first. It changes everything.

Flexibility in body, flexibility in mind.

The more you stretch physically, the more you learn to adapt mentally. Yoga teaches you to bend without breaking.

Stay grounded, stay present.

Horses live in the moment. They don't worry about yesterday or tomorrow. Practice being here, now, with them.

Strength comes from balance, not force.

You don't need to be the strongest person in the barn. You need to be steady, centered, and sure of yourself.

Every challenge is a teacher.

That storm that led me to this barn? Best teacher I ever had. Don't run from hard things—they're showing you something.

Listen more than you speak.

Horses talk with their bodies. People talk with their words. But the real conversation happens in the quiet moments between.

Find your center, then share it.

When you're calm and grounded, everyone around you feels it—especially the horses. Your energy is contagious.

Trust the journey, even when you can't see the path.

I followed a tiny light through a storm and found home. Sometimes you just have to keep moving forward.

Rest is part of the work.

Even adventurers need to sleep in a pile of hay sometimes. Honor your body. Honor your limits.
